Beta Hummel was born in Bavaria in 1909 with a wonderful gift. She had a surprising instinct for observing the people and events around her and a talent for translating her overservations into drawings - especially drawings of children. |

It was Berta's, and the world's, good fortune that her father recognized and nurtured her talent. In 1927, he excored her to Munich where Berta enrolled in the Academy of Applied Arts. There, her talent grew, matured and survived rigid tranings with its spontaneity intact. | |
| When Berta took her vows, she took the name Maria Innocentia. The young sister found herself in a setting that envouraged the flowering of her artistic talents. Small German publishers soon began printing some of her artwork in the form of postcards. These charming cards came to the attention of Franz Goebel, the fourth-generation owner and head of the porcelain company bearing this name. He was in search of a subject for a new line of figurines.
